Life, learning and leadership
The Journal of Executive Learning, Information and Knowledge.
The Journal Management Today is the only journal in South Africa which is positioned as a source of management learning, information and knowledge. In this regard, we concentrate both on the career manager as well as the senior (part-time) student who is in full-time employment studying for an MBA or who participates in an executive programme or other relevant course. The journal is in its 17th year of publication and started under the title of Human Resource Management before its name change in 1997 at which time the editorial focus moved sufficiently towards the more strategic and leadership issues in business to justify the new title. It is owned by Richard Havenga who started the journal in 1985 and who is still the publishing editor.
The Partnerships
Various organisations participate in the journal, but, besides a seat on the editorial board and making contributions to the editorial content, they have no other say in the magazine. The most notable of these alliances are with the Graduate School of Business Leadership at Unisa, the SBL's alumni association, the Centre for Business Management at Unisa, a number of private academic institutions, the South African Quality Institute, the South African Institute of Management Consultants, the Association of Project Management and the ASTD-Forum. Various other institutions have indicated their involvement either later this year or from the beginning of next year.
The Editorial Policy
Management Today concentrates its editorial content on three main areas namely management development, leadership and business strategy. Editorial is sourced locally and overseas with the aim being to benchmark these articles internationally while maintaining their local relevance. Key issues in the South African business environment are addressed in addition to interviews with business leaders and internationally renowned management and leadership thinkers. Case studies on local companies feature regularly as this is one area where practical information and knowledge are in short supply both for students and managers.
A healthy balance between theory and practice needs to be maintained which makes the relationship between the publication and representatives of its alliance partners of vital importance.
